New York, September 23, 2025 – Biodiversity Intelligence, the Environmental Markets Fairness Foundation (EMFF), and Cercarbono have announced a strategic Alliance aimed at accelerating the development of high-integrity biodiversity markets worldwide. The collaboration will focus on the co-development of the Biodiversity Intelligence Methodology (BIM) for restoration, to be implemented under Cercarbono’s Biodiversity Certification Programme, and on supporting the advancement of biodiversity projects across global markets.
The BIM is a scientifically rigorous framework designed to measure, monitor, and manage the impacts of projects on biodiversity and ecosystems. Its uniqueness lies in two pioneering indicators: the Biodiversity Performance Status (BPS), which evaluates the ecological integrity of project areas by comparing them with reference ecosystems, and the Nature Integrity Score (NIS), which provides a unique and comparable measure of biodiversity health across functional groups, enabling monitoring over time. Together, these indicators provide a robust basis for issuing biodiversity credits that quantify ecological improvements, channeling investment into conservation and restoration efforts.
Through this framework, nature-based projects can precisely measure biodiversity outcomes, evaluate their impacts over time, and optimize management strategies to enhance ecological resilience. It also establishes a solid foundation for financial institutions and companies to invest in biodiversity-positive initiatives, fulfilling sustainability commitments while generating measurable environmental, social, and economic returns.
As part of the alliance, EMFF will act as a technical observer and safeguards coordinator, ensuring that projects applying the BIM comply with social, governance, and environmental safeguards. Oversight will be aligned with leading international frameworks, territory-based approaches, rooted in a rigorous analysis of local contexts and community priorities, guaranteeing the legitimacy and sustainability of biodiversity credits. Patricio Lombardi, Executive Director of EMFF said, “Every business, everywhere in the world, depends on nature. Biodiversity is the operating system of life, and its protection must be a shared responsibility. By fostering fairness in environmental markets, we can channel investment into real, measurable, and ecologically sustainable action. This alliance arises as a milestone to align conservation and sustainable resource use, driving investment toward resilient, biodiversity-aligned opportunities.”
Alex Saer, CEO of Cercarbono said “This alliance represents a significant milestone in building the foundations of global biodiversity markets. By combining scientific innovation, safeguards, and certification, we are setting the stage for measurable and trustworthy biodiversity outcomes that attract capital and benefit both ecosystems and local communities”.
Nahuel Schenone, CEO of Biodiversity Intelligence stated “This is a huge step towards our commitment to creating bridges between science, nature, and society. I’m thrilled to see the methodology empowering both certification programs and project developers, enabling them to precisely measure biodiversity outcomes and unlock a future where conservation delivers tangible, verifiable results. This alliance will bring the possibility to scale up multiple projects paving the way for nature-positive economies.”
The partnership between Biodiversity Intelligence, EMFF, and Cercarbono marks a pioneering step in scaling biodiversity crediting worldwide, creating new opportunities for biodiversity-positive investments and positioning high-integrity credits as a cornerstone of the emerging nature economy.
